What is one of your earliest memories of music?
My dad was really into Southern Gospel Music. I remember going with him to a High School Gymnasium to watch JD Sumner of the Stamps Quartet. My dad told me that JD was one of the lowest basses in the world. He failed to mention that he used to sing with Elvis, which was even cooler.

Who are some of your favorite artists and why?
My favorite artist would be Greg Laswell. He is an incredible lyricist—he paints such an incredible picture with his melodies and music. Jeff Buckley was like no other! His songs evoke such emotion. I love Tom Chaplin’s (of Keane) voice and melodies. Karen Carpenter would be an oldie, but a good one. She was one of the brighter spots in my dad’s music collection. She had such a calming and unique voice.

How did you get into the music business?
My dad had retired from teaching and was always talking about moving to either Kentucky or Tennessee—why those two places, I don’t know. Tennessee became the clear cut choice because my older brother was living in Nashville with his wife. I was actually one of the few people that had not relocated there because of music. My older brother, on the other hand, was in a vocal group. One of the guys that was in the group with my brother had an independent music company. We became friends, apparently he saw something in me that I didn’t see, and he asked me to come work with him. I had no idea what I was doing and knew nothing about the music industry. But that invitation changed my life and my career path.
